Replacing Water Filters and Cartridges - How to tell it's time?
Share
Potential signs of a water filter needing replacement:
- Have you noticed a change in water pressure from your faucets?
- Has someone else commented on the taste or smell of the water from your faucets?
- Maybe you’ve identified visible floating particles in your water that shouldn’t be there?
If you have an undersink water filter or whole home water filter, it might be time to consider replacing your filter cartridges.
Consequences that may arise from not regularly replacing your water filter:
- Lower or higher water pressure could indicate that your filter has aged, is clogged or is beginning to break down.
- Changes in taste or smell indicates that your filter is no longer effectively filtering out impurities such as chlorine, sulfur, organic material and heavy metals.
- Extreme cases occur where your filter reaches capacity for capturing contaminants leading to exposure to lead, mercury, pesticides and other toxic materials.
- An aging water filter can also become a breeding ground for bacteria, mold and other microorganisms especially during warmer months in the summer. If you’ve installed a water filter in your home, chances are you place a high priority on having clean drinking water at home for you and your family.
So, how often should you change your filters?
- Carbon Filters need replacing every 6 to 12 months but that can vary depending on how hard or contaminated your water source is.
- Sediment Filters need replacing every 6 to 12 months but that can vary depending on how hard or contaminated your water source is.
- In Reverse Osmosis systems, your pre-filters should be replaced every 6 to 12 months and your membrane should be replaced every 2 to 4 years.
Keep in mind, these numbers vary based on how contaminated or hard your water may be. For best results, we recommend testing your water frequently to determine water quality.
